This Month's Focus: Leaders and Their Energy

iPEC defines leadership as the ability to inspire and motivate others—and yourself—to take life-changing action to create extraordinary results that last. By this definition, every one of us is a leader. But how well you lead depends on your level of energy, or consciousness.

There are two types of energy that influence leadership styles: anabolic energy and catabolic energy. Anabolic energy is constructive and building, associated with effective leadership. Great leaders build relationships, teams, and businesses, creating a positive ripple effect wherever they go. On the other hand, catabolic energy is destructive, breaking down relationships and opportunities.

In the next few issues, we’ll explore the characteristics of both anabolic and catabolic leadership styles, helping you identify how to lead in a way that aligns with your values.

Catabolic Leadership: Controlling and Breaking Down

A catabolic leader manages. The word “manage” means “to handle, direct, govern, or control in action or use.”

Catabolic leaders tend to dominate or control others, telling people what to do and how to do it. This approach often leaves others feeling disempowered, which can result in complaints like, “I can’t find good help,” or “No one does things as well as I do.”

🔥This style may get short-term results but often leads to burnout, conflict, and inefficiency in the long run.

Anabolic Leadership: Inspiring and Building Up

An anabolic leader leads. The word “lead” means “to go before or with to show the way” or “to guide in direction, course, or action.”

This approach is supportive and empowering. Anabolic leaders don’t push or control people; instead, they inspire and guide through their words, actions, and personal example.

🔥Anabolic leaders show up with a perspective that allows them to trust others’ abilities, creating a culture where people feel empowered to bring their best ideas and talents to the table.

The Impact of Catabolic vs. Anabolic Leadership

Consider this example: When a catabolic leader demands or orders someone to complete a task, the response is often negative - phrases like “I have to” or “I need to” are common. In contrast, an anabolic leader requests input or asks for help, inspiring responses like “I want to” or “I choose to.” This shift in energy creates a more engaged and motivated environment.

Your Challenge for This Month💡

As you interact with others this month, reflect on how often you “lead” versus “manage.” What small changes can you make to show the way, guide, and inspire rather than control?

Anabolic leadership is a practice, and with each step, you can create stronger relationships, teams, and results. 🚀
